ME K12 Fi Solutions exists because Maine school leaders spend too much time decoding budgets, legislation, and federal compliance rules, time that should go toward students, not spreadsheets.
Who’s behind it
Tyler Backus has spent over a decade inside the systems Maine school districts have to navigate every day. As School Finance & Compliance Coordinator at the Maine Department of Education (2014–2022), he built the fiscal architecture for ESSER and CRF funding during the COVID-19 crisis and regularly presented fiscal and policy impacts directly to the Maine Legislature and school districts statewide.
He began that work as Management Analyst for IDEA Federal Programs, where he inherited a program with multiple federal audit findings and eliminated all of them within two years through better systems, training, and enforcement, not shortcuts. He later took on direction of all federal grant programs while leading the school finance team, expanding that same disciplined approach departmentwide.
He is currently Finance & Compliance Associate Director for Maine’s RHTP federal grant. He has also taught graduate-level school finance and federal compliance coursework at Thomas College, and served as a Senior Research Fellow at Georgetown University’s Edunomics Lab, training states nationally on fiscal data systems and transparency tools.
He holds a Certificate in Education Finance from Georgetown, a Master of Public Policy & Management from USM, and is completing a Master of Governmental Accounting at Rutgers.
How it’s free
Right now, ME K12 Fi Solutions is self-funded. The plan is to grow into a 501(c)(3) supported by philanthropic partners, but the commitment to Maine districts doesn’t change either way: no fees, no consulting invoices, no sales pitch. Just tools built by someone who’s sat on both sides of the audit table.
